Canada : Sinclair Calls BC Jobs Report Dismal " Fault belongs to Clark government

21,800 fewer full time jobs for British Columbians

Vancouver, BC - B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair said that today's Stats Can data shows once again the Christy Clark government's dismal failure on the economy and job creation.

"It feels like every time Christy Clark says ‘jobs' our province sheds another full time job," said Sinclair. "It's time for the Premier to stop holding meaningless photo-ops and BBQ chats and show some actual leadership."

Sinclair called for a jobs summit to be held urgently, with business, labour and government at the table. "It's clear this government cannot create a positive environment for job creation on its own."

The report shows BC has lost 21,800 full time jobs from August 2010 to August 2011, and that BC's unemployment rate has risen to 7.5 percent despite people leaving the labour force.

In the same period, Alberta created more than 80,000 full time jobs.

Sinclair said that Clark has had more than six months in office to take action, but instead focused her entire attention on a failed effort to save a $2 billion annual giveaway to big business.

"More than 180,000 British Columbians that want work; can't find it. Thousands more that want full time work are stuck in part-time jobs," said Sinclair. "The policies of this Liberal government have failed. It's time for a new approach and new leadership, and I'm afraid we are unlikely to see that from Premier Clark."
